SMU-Licensed Standard Software
The standard software comprises some of the commonly used software and packages that are implemented campus-wide such as Microsoft Office and TrendMicro anti-virus software. The standard suite is currently funded centrally by the University.
The above service will entail the following undertakings by IITS:
- Coordinate and manage software subscription, including renewal, for campus-wide standard suite of software.
- Acquire adequate licenses for the SMU-licensed suite of software applicable for PCs and notebooks used by faculty, staff and students on campus.
- Provide support for the installation of SMU-licensed software for eligible users

Note: For Student Standard Software Suite, each student is only entitled to install one copy of the above software on one notebook. For students who own more than one notebook, the 2nd notebook would not be entitled for the above software.
Non-standard Software
This refers to any software that did not fall under the SMU-Licensed Standard Software category, this also includes Research software for Teaching and Research purposes: Thenon-standard software typically refers to software and packages that some users in the SMU community may require for specific teaching and research purposes. Cost for the non-standard software would be funded by the member of the faculty or staff, or the sponsoring School/Office.
The above service will entail the following undertakings by IITS:
- Coordinate and manage commonly-used research software subscriptions, which would include license renewal and software upgrades;
- Provide advice, as well as assistance in the procurement, and installation .
- Provide cost accountabilities for the networked research software acquired
- Software under this category are:
- Research Software: Faculty members can have access to some applications that they can use for research such as SPSS, SAS, STATA, Matlab and Mathematica are subject to license availability. In addition, IITS can also help on the acquisition for other software, upon request.
- Datasets: Faculty can find an array of databases and datasets available for their research from the SMU Library. For other non-standard datasets, IITS can help on the acquisition, upon request.
- SharePoint: SharePoint workspaces are available for researchers wishing to have a common workspace to consolidate and collaborate with other researchers on data and information. Workspaces incorporate components like Project Tasks, Wikis, document libraries and more that enhances collaborative efforts.
- Multimedia Editing Software: Mostly refers to Adobe's editing software such as Photoshop, Acrobat Editor, Dreamweaver and etc… IITS will also help on the acquisition of the said software.
- Survey Tools: Online survey tools are available for researchers seeking to do surveys on the internet or within campus. Researchers have a choice of:
- Qualtrics online survey software for Internet participants
- SharePoint survey tool to conduct surveys for the local campus population
- Others: Microsoft Project and Visio are also quite common for project management, upon request we can also help on sourcing for price quotation.
Terms of Use
All acquired software, regardless of the classification, are strictly for the use by current SMU Faculty, Staff and Students.
- All software licenses for campus and home use, the latter if applicable, are limited to one copy per user
- Software upgrades are not available to faculty, staff or student who ceases to be an employee or student who has graduated from SMU.
