IITS is maintaining a set of licenses for some applications that can be used in SMU for specific teaching and research purposes. Usage and installation of these softwares are not free. The costs involved for the usage are for the annual license renewal, maintenance fee of the software and other cost that may be needed on maintaining these licenses.
Here's how we calculate the license renewal cost:
- Every year we divide the total cost and expenses to the number of registered users for the past year.
- The resulting amount will then be sent to the respective schools for verification.
- Once all has agreed, the license renewal will proceed.
Below is a sample computation for easy reference. In this example the software license renewal costs SGD 10,000.00 for 100 users. These 100 users are from different schools/departments. Below is the breakdown and the shared cost for every department.

Wolfram Mathematica Sometimes referred to as Mathematica is a symbolic mathematical computation program, sometimes called a computer algebra program, used in many scientific, engineering, mathematical, and computing fields. It was conceived by Stephen Wolfram and is developed by Wolfram Research of Champaign, Illinois. The Wolfram Language is the programming language used in Mathematica.
SMU currently have network license version. You can check Mathematica's product page here
MATLAB (matrix laboratory) is a multi-paradigm numerical computing environment and fourth-generation programming language. A proprietary programming language developed by MathWorks, MATLAB allows matrix manipulations, plotting of functions and data, implementation of algorithms, creation of user interfaces, and interfacing with programs written in other languages, including C, C++, Java, Fortran and Python.

SPSS Statistics is a software package used for statistical analysis. Long produced by SPSS Inc., it was acquired by IBM in 2009. The current version is officially named IBM SPSS Statistics.
SMU currently have network license version and standalone license version. You can check SPSS' product page here
STATA is a general-purpose statistical software package created in 1985 by StataCorp. Most of its users work in research, especially in the fields of economics, sociology, political science, biomedicine and epidemiology. Stata's capabilities include data management, statistical analysis, graphics, simulations, regression, and custom programming.
SMU currently have standalone license version. You can check STATA' product page here
Stat/Transfer allows you to select output variables and control their storage types, allows case selection and random sampling, and provides a variety of options to let you tailor Stat/Transfer to match your needs and the nature of your data. The Stat/Transfer user interface lets you do routine transfers with just a few clicks.

How to Request for Installation
Upon request SMU staff and Faculty members can have access to the applications. Please download and fill-up the forms below. Once the information is complete, kindly email it to helpdesk@smu.edu.sg together with the necessary attachments:
- Request form for Faculty and Staff.
- Request form for Students and Research Assistants (this will require Staff/Faculty endorsement).
Once the form is received:
- Help Centre will seek a final approval(or verification/endorsement) from your school/department.
- Once verifiedyou will be informed and installation will proceed.
Note :
- Please check the table above for more details on how we calculate for the cost.
- To facilitate the request, kindly ensure that the details of the request are complete.
How to Report a Problem
If encounter any usage issues, we'll be escalating your inquiries to the vendors or makers to the software. Kindly provide as much information as you can. For your guidance, please send us the following:
- Name and version of the application you are currently using.
- Screen shot of the error message that shows error number or any details of the error.
- If the problem is reproducible, please let us know the step-by-step procedure on how we can reproduce your problem.
- What is the expected result of the steps, and what is the current result (error/problem).
- If the problem is not reproducible, kindly give us details of what are you currently doing on the application when the error or the problem occurs.
- Your current computer specification. Like Operating System (version and bitness), CPU and RAM.
- Go to Control Panel
- Click System and Security
