How to reset the MFA authenticator app

In line with the removal of SMS as part of the authentication method for SMS,  you are required to use the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone to perform MFA verification.
If you have previously set up the authenticator app as your verification method for multi-factor authentication (MFA), but you have changed your phone or the app is not working, you need to reset the app to access your account.

Step 1: Proceed to MFA security info site.

Please go to the MFA Security Info Page via the link: https://smu.sg/mfa.

If you are unable to access the page due to MFA authentication issue, kindly contact IT Help Centre and request to reset MFA for your account. This will allow you to sign in temporarily to MFA Security Info page without MFA verification.

Step 2: Delete the existing Microsoft Authenticator method.

On the Security info page, select the Delete link next to the Authenticator app. Select Yes when asked to confirm to delete the authenticator app.

After the authenticator app is deleted, it’s removed from your security info, and it disappears from the Security info page.
If there was no Microsoft authenticator in the available sign-in method please proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Configure the Microsoft Authenticator app.

Select the "+Add sign-in method", and choose Authenticator app.

For more instructions, please proceed to: Set up the Microsoft Authenticator app as your verification method. You must scan a QR code with your phone camera within the Microsoft Authenticator app to link the app with your account.

Step 4: Choose the correct default sign-in method.

Once the authenticator app is configured, ensure the correct sign-in method is selected. Verify if the “Sign-in method when most advisable is unavailable: Microsoft Authenticator – notification” is selected under security info.

If other options are selected, change your default sign-in method to app-based authentication - notification by selecting "Change", and confirm your choice.

Step 5: Test the app.

To make sure the app is working properly, you can test it by signing into your account and approving a notification from the app. You can also use the app to generate a one-time code if you don’t receive a notification.
