Overview
Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) is a Microsoft service that allows users who have forgotten their SMU account password to set a new password. Additionally, users can also use SSPR to unlock their account if they have been locked out.
Who can use this service
Students, Faculty, and Staff
One-time setup
Step 1
Please proceed to Security info page. Ensure your Microsoft Authenticator and/or personal Email are part of the sign-in method.
Step 2
If these options are not configured, select "Add sign-in method".
Select the Authenticator app or Email and follow the prompts to add them.
Once the sign-in methods are added, you can now perform password reset via SSPR.
How to perform password reset via SSPR
To reset or change your password, follow the steps below:
Step 1 :
Proceed to SSPR portal and key in your full SMU email address. Complete the CAPTCHA and select Next.
Note: If you get the error below, that means you have not done the One-Time setup. Please complete the steps in One-Time setup before performing password reset.
Step 2 :
Select the "I forgot my password" option and click Next.
Step 3 :
Choose your preferred method to obtain the verification code.
Step 4
After you entered the Verification code, you will be directed to choose a new password screen. Enter and confirm the new password, and select Finish.
Step 4
Done. You can now start using your new password
How to Unlock Account via SSPR
To unlock your account, please follow the steps below.
Step 1 :
Proceed to SSPR portal and key in your full SMU email address. Complete the CAPTCHA and select Next.
Note: If you get the error below, that means you have not done the One-Time setup. Please complete the steps in One-Time setup before performing password reset.
Step 2 :
Select the "I know my password, but still can't sign in" option and click Next.
Step 3 :
Choose your preferred method to obtain the verification code.
Step 4
Once you have verified your identity successfully, you will see a success message that your account has been unlocked.

1. How do I change my registered Authenticator app or email address in SSPR. system.
To change your registered Authenticator app or email address, please visit My Sign-Ins | Security Info | Microsoft.com.
2. What methods are employed by SSPR to reset or unlock my password securely?
SSPR uses Microsoft Authenticator App and/or personal email.
3. If SMS or Phone is your sole authentication method, what actions should you take?
If you only have SMS or Phone as your MFA authentication option, you will be asked to set up the Microsoft Authenticator App or personal email verification when accessing SharePoint or any Microsoft Office online application (as per the image below) after SSPR is enabled.
To eliminate these prompts, you must add the Microsoft Authenticator App or personal email verification as an additional authentication method.
